Submissions POETRY Kuumba seeks previously unpublished verse of the highest quality. Your work should be well written and feature themes related to the experience of being black and in the life. You may submit up to five original poems at one time, but no more than one poem per page. All poetry should be typed, with line and stanza breaks clearly delineated. Include your name and mailing address. Tell us if you wish to use a pseudonym. ILLUSTRATIONS Kuumba also seeks line-art illustrations related to the experience of being black and in the life. These are typically images of two women or two men, but we are open to other possibilities. Acceptable media include pen-and-ink, pencil line, linoleum cut, woodcut, and computer-generated or digital illustrations that mimic these styles. We are less interested in illustrations that include tonal graduations such as watercolor or airbrush. We are not accepting photographs at this time. Submit photocopies of your work. Do not send originals. DEADLINES While we accept submissions year-round, submissions should be postmarked no later than February 1 to be considered for publication in the spring/summer issue, October 1 for consideration in the fall/winter issue. RIGHTS Kuumba secures first North American rights and the right to anthologize accepted work. You retain all other rights to your work.
